Previous Editions
It takes commitment to innovate in a circular economy.
This is the work developed through the first 3 editions of Re_Source, launched in 2021 – a collaborative open innovation program focused on transforming the packaging waste sector.
The Open Innovation program sought to address macro-issues such as digitalization, material sustainability, consumer behavior, and collection and recovery.
The 3rd edition of Re_Source focused on addressing macro-challenges in packaging waste, including behavior change, traceability, circular digital packaging, efficient collection, and advanced sorting & recycling technologies.

re_source 2023 – Pilots

Understanding student behaviour to reduce waste
Behavioural study with NOVA FCT students to design “nudge” interventions (physical and digital) that improve separation habits on campus.

Behavioural change in Estremoz street market
Motivating vendors and market visitors to separate waste, using social dynamics and low-barrier nudges.

Recycling the food court
Using QR-coded bags and AI to analyse and trace mixed waste in food courts, linking data back to each establishment.

Stairway to Digital Product Passports
Development and testing of DPPs (Digital Product Passports) for the packaging value chain, including implementation of prototypes and industry guidelines.

Sustainable polymer development
Using AI and machine learning to accelerate the creation of biopolymers for compostable bottles, reducing R&D time and cost.

Robotic arm for sorting packaging waste
Implementation of an AI-powered robotic arm at the Sotavento sorting facility to automate waste separation.

AI-driven eco-point placement
Development of an AI tool to determine optimal placement of recycling containers in São Brás de Alportel.

Smart compostable bags with QR codes
Deployment of QR-coded bags for organic waste tracking in Cascais, enabling traceability from consumer to treatment facility.

Sustainable product rewards system
Engaging consumers through QR codes on Silvex’s sustainable products, unlocking environmental rewards like planting trees or removing ocean plastic.

Real-time waste flow analysis
Installation of AI-powered cameras to analyse and characterise waste streams at Valorlis MRF, generating operational dashboards.

Full-stack robotic sorting system
Integration of Danu Robotics’ AI + robotic picking solution to sort packaging waste by type and material in near-real time.

Smart Reusable Traceable refill system
Pilot of a QR-based traceability system for reusable packaging, incentivising consumers for each refill and collecting behavioural data.
